Ingredients

Beef Sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp chili paste or hot sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
Dumplings
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt for dumplings
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp green onions chopped

Equipment

  • Deep Skillet or Pot
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3 minutes until soft and fragrant.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring often so it does not burn.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook while breaking it apart with a spoon until the meat is browned and no longer pink.
  4. Stir in chili paste, paprika, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well so the spices coat the beef evenly.
  5. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef broth. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
  6. In a mixing bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add butter and milk, stirring until a thick soft dough forms.
  7. Scoop small spoonfuls of dumpling dough and drop them into the simmering beef mixture, leaving space between each dumpling.
  8. Cover the pot and cook for 12 to 15 minutes until the dumplings puff up and become soft. Sprinkle chopped green onions on top before serving.

Notes

Keep the sauce at a gentle simmer while cooking the dumplings. Covering the pot traps steam which helps the dumplings become light and fluffy instead of dense.
