Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon sugar optional
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped, optional

Equipment

  • Large Pot

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked through.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix until well combined.
  5. Season with salt, oregano, basil, black pepper, and sugar if using. Stir thoroughly.
  6. Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Simmer the sauce uncovered to develop flavor and thicken it. Avoid over-seasoning early on. Ground turkey or sausage can be used instead of beef. Store leftovers in the fridge for 4 days or freeze for 3 months.
