  • 1 1/2 cups warm water about 110°F
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
For Boiling and Finishing
  • 6 cups water for boiling
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 2 tbsp butter melted, for brushing
  • coarse salt for sprinkling

Method
 

  1. Stir warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl and let it rest for five minutes.
  2. Mix in the flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for about one hour.
  5. Bring water and baking soda to a gentle boil in a large pot.
  6. Divide the dough into small pieces and roll each into a thin rope.
  7. Shape each rope into a heart and lower it quickly into the baking soda bath.
  8. Boil each heart for about thirty seconds and move to a lined baking sheet.
  9. Brush each heart with melted butter and sprinkle lightly with salt.
  10. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10 to 12 minutes until golden.
  11. Cool slightly before serving with dips or spreads.
