Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp cream cheese softened
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
For Serving
  • 4 sandwich rolls or thick sliced bread
  • butter for toasting bread

Equipment

  • Skillet

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil, then add the ground beef. Cook while breaking it apart until browned and no pink remains.
  2. Add chopped onion to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture. Stir well so the flour coats the meat evenly.
  5. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring. Let the mixture simmer for 3 to 5 minutes until thick and creamy.
  6. Lower the heat. Add cream cheese and shredded cheddar. Stir until melted and smooth.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust as needed.
  8. Butter the bread and toast in a pan until golden on both sides.
  9. Spoon the creamy beef mixture onto the toasted bread. Serve warm.

Notes

Use ground beef with a bit of fat (like 80/20) for better flavor. Stir the sauce frequently while simmering to prevent sticking. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of milk; if too thin, simmer a bit longer. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat with extra milk.
