Method
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a baking dish so nothing sticks.
- Wash and thinly slice the potatoes, keeping the slices as even as possible so they cook at the same rate.
- In a mixing bowl, stir together the cream or milk, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper to make the sauce.
- Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish. Top with half of the chicken or ham and half of the shredded cheese.
- Pour some of the sauce evenly over the layer.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, meat, cheese, and sauce.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely.
Notes
Use pre-cooked chicken or leftover ham to save time. For a lighter version, use milk instead of heavy cream. You can also add broccoli or spinach for extra color and nutrition, or make it in a slow cooker on low for about 6 hours.
